Niki Newman: Sommelier & Wine Buyer
My name is Niki Newman, and I am your wine specialist here at Leibman’s Wine & Fine Foods. A Native Houstonian and University of Houston Graduate, I have been studying wine for the past 12 years.
I began my culinary adventures as a waiter at Orlando’s Seafood Shack while putting myself through school, and I have since worked at high-end and award-winning restaurants such as Two Chefs Bistro, Tony Mandola’s Gulf Coast Kitchen, and Backstreet Café.
I have swirled and tasted my way through Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, and Austria to train and educate my palate. I studied under Monsterville Horton, IV, certified wine educator and Houston wine guru, for over two years while helping to open and build Cova Hand Selected Wines to its current cult status. During this time I worked behind the scenes as an office manager, in the public eye as the events coordinator, and on the restaurant floor as a manager. I have been thoroughly trained in all aspects of the wine & food industry and have been highly regarded for my impeccable palate, down to earth demeanor, and drive for success.
I received my Masters Degree at the University of Houston in Hotel Restaurant Management, am a certified Sommelier through the International Court of Sommeliers, and am working towards becoming a Certified Wine Specialist from the Society of Wine Educators. I teach an array of specialty wine classes, tailored and suited to fit the needs of wine lovers, novice to expert. So, be on the lookout for new and exciting wines, wine accessories, events, classes, and wine dinners! Whether you need consulting for your wine list or personal cellar, or whether you want to host wine tastings, or whether you just need good wine advice, my expertise will prove to be exactly what you're looking for.
